How to design and create a bed you’ll never want to leave

A world of style choices for your bed of dreams

“Sleep is the best meditation,” said the Dalai Lama, highlighting perhaps the most effective health and wellness treatment of them all. When we sleep, our body refreshes and repairs and regular, top-quality sleep has been shown to strengthen the heart, improve memory and concentration and restore both energy levels and mood to a happy equilibrium.

While sleep is the ultimate luxury, work pressures, family life and a constant ticker-tape of thoughts running through our minds often conspire to make a solid night’s sleep tantalisingly illusive. For Swedish premier bed brand Carpe Diem Beds, the search for effective sleep - good quality rest, night after night after night – starts with the best bed you can buy in a thoughtfully designed bedroom.

Your bedroom should be a place to linger, an atmospheric and indulgent retreat from a full throttle lifestyle. How do you achieve this? For Carpe Diem Beds it’s all about the details as Rui Franca, Manager of their newly launched flagship showroom in Marylebone explains.

“Before setting out on your next bedroom re-design project it’s important to create a mood board and colour scheme,” he says. “Your bed is the centrepiece of the bedroom and therefore it should be at the centre of your designs.”

The beds and mattresses from Carpe Diem Beds are all handmade in Sweden with an uncompromising eye on quality. And while comfort is paramount, they also understand the importance of design, offering a range of style options to make the most private room in the home also the most welcoming. From a choice of seven headboards models to the finishing touch of satin-weave and Egyptian cotton linens, their choices incorporate timeless world-famous Swedish style with luxurious quality to create a bed you’ll never want to leave.

“We have a range of 36 exclusive fabrics from Designers Guild and Romo Group, all inspired by the colours of nature on the west coast Sweden and specially selected so that any can be paired together,” explains Mr Franco. “They can be carefully matched with your existing bedroom style or provide the inspiration for a total redesign.”

Carpe Diem Beds design style crosses from traditional to cutting-edge. If you dream about recreating a hotel-at-home bedroom with chic, sophisticated five-star luxe, start with the classic deep-buttoned Bornö headboard and cover it and the bed in a striking colour that pops against the walls. Raise the height of the bed – all Carpe Diem beds are available in a variety of widths and lengths as well - and finish with crisp white linen for the ultimate softness and a fabulous faux fur throw to add texture.

Aiming for a more minimalist look? Choose the simplicity of the Solo headboard, available in multiple sizes, and cover it in a pale grey chenille and add plain black aluminium legs and a mulberry silk duvet. The right accessories turn a bed into a striking object, a calming centrepiece to use as a design starting point.

“Playing around with fabrics and colours is a wonderful way to create an impactful bedroom design,” says Mr Franco. “I’ve seen clients choose vibrant fabrics for their bedframe and headboard for a truly dramatic statement piece. However if you want greater flexibility in your bedroom and create a design that will outlast design trends, I recommend choosing a neutral colour for your bedframe and headboard and then going bold on throw pillows, wall colours and carpets.”

These design choices, underscored by the recurrent thread of supreme Swedish style, are just two examples. Play around with lighting, accessories and furniture before completing the finishing touches. Carpe Diem Beds range includes slippers, dressing robes and scented candles. There’s even the Hunnebo dog bed, made from their mattress stretch pocket for extra comfort and available in two sizes to ensure that your pets too get their best possible sleep. After all, no-one wants to start the day by getting out of the wrong side of bed.
