Meet the Artists: Anne Imhof

Anne Imhof arrived onto the international scene in 2017, when she represented Germany at the Venice Biennale with her durational performance FAUST. Featuring a haughty cast of performers (and a few dogs), FAUST’s raw energy electrified the critics and landed the artist the Golden Lion that year. Since then, Imhof’s operatic stagings have cropped up in some of Europe’s most prestigious museums, from London’s Tate Modern, to Paris’s Palais de Tokyo, and Turin’s Casello di Rivoli, where her immersive piece SEX is on view until November 7. Imhof’s artistic roots run deep, back to the music scene in Frankfurt, where she studied at the celebrated Städelschule. They also connect, rhizome-like, with a large network of collaborators, including her long-time partner, the model, artist, and performer Eliza Douglas. While performance is what Imhof is most readily associated with, it is only one aspect of the German artist’s prolific output. In this episode of ‘Meet the Artists’, she discusses how painting, drawing, and music are all part of her intensely synergetic practice.
